Creativity, Reconciliation, & Flourishing
As the first chapters of Genesis demonstrate, a life of flourishing for human beings involves both creativity and community. Whether the creative output is a seasonal garden or stirring music, working together to create beauty is both a metaphor and a method for seeking reconciliation in the church and the broader world.
David Bailey and Mia Chung-Yee are talented creators, working with others on varied projects spanning music, community-building, education, and much else. Together, they will help us to think deeply and work faithfully towards creativity, reconciliation, and human flourishing in whatever communities we are part of.
We held an Online Conversation with David Bailey and Mia Chung-Yee to explore the connections between imagination and community.
Thank you to our co-host, Octet Collaborative for their support of this event!

The Seven Deadly Sins in a Secular Age with Elizabeth Oldfield
Переглядів 778День тому
In our time people sense that much is wrong - in the world and even within themselves. Many feel that they are somehow less than “fully alive,” yet might never consider turning to religion for the answers they long for. Can the ancient concept of sin become meaningful, and even liberating, in a secular age? In her new book, Fully Alive: Tending to the Soul in Turbulent Times, popular British po...
John Inazu: Learning to Disagree
Переглядів 64721 день тому
As we seek to faithfully navigate the challenges of a polarized and partisan 2024, we each confront the question: how do we learn to disagree wisely and well? Can people of faith model robust dialogue-and preserve relationships-in good faith without surrendering or downplaying our convictions? John Inazu’s latest book, Learning to Disagree, draws from experiences teaching in the fraught areas o...
The Brave In-Between

We all want to experience joy rather than sorrow, pleasure rather than pain, and victory rather than defeat. These binaries usually seem clear, but when that clarity seems elusive in a time of testing, is it possible to live with hope in the space between them? Living with a diagnosis of Stage IV metastatic colon cancer, Amy Low has confronted this question in the context of her own mortality. ...
Practicing Civic Discipleship
Переглядів 398Місяць тому
The polarization and confusion among Christians in this moment have left many unsure about how to pursue faithful engagement in public life. Some wonder if they would be better off simply tuning out politics and retreating to more private spheres, while others have grown more convinced that extreme times merit extreme responses. So what does it mean to follow Christ in the public square? What p...
Practicing the Way with John Mark Comer

The Gospels speak often of following Jesus and becoming his disciples. But what does it mean - millennia later and half a world away - to follow after Christ? Drawing from his new book Practicing the Way, John Mark Comer explores the depths of the three seemingly simple steps he describes to becoming a disciple: “Be with Jesus. Become like him. Do as he did.” Building upon his landmark previous...
Words Against Despair

“In my experience, the worst despair is meaninglessness,” says Christian Wiman. “It’s not necessarily thinking that you’re going to die. It’s the feeling that life has been leeched of meaning.” In his new book, Zero at the Bone: Fifty Entries Against Despair, the acclaimed poet chases meaning through words, including memoir and poetry. Wiman returned to Christian faith in part through a termina...

What Really Matters

In a world of hurt, what power do we have in our own small spheres to face the pain around us and offer hope, healing, and comfort? Do we need epic plans - or can we begin the work of repair with something as simple as a meal, an open home or a handwritten letter? Grammy Award-winning music producer Charlie Peacock along with his wife, author Andi Ashworth, have written Why Everything That Does...

Life has changed dramatically in the 400 years since John Donne wrote his Devotions. Yet despite the advances of the intervening centuries, we find that, like Donne, we are still subject to sickness and death. We still long for comfort. We still want to know what God is saying to us. Philip Yancey found surprisingly relevant answers to those perennial questions in the works of John Donne. “Noth...

American Christians have not been immune to the anger, division, and fear that characterize this political moment. For many, the prospect of another election year is a source of dread or of numb exhaustion; others have responded with aggression or defensiveness. Reflecting on our recent history, what can we learn from the varied responses? How can we proceed with wisdom, and a Christlike witnes...
Perfectly Human: Why Understanding Disability Matters to all of us

The gospels are replete with stories of Christ healing those who are sick and disabled. Thousands of years later, despite our medical and social advances and a thriving wellness industry, individuals and communities are still hurting. What do those gospel stories say to us now, amidst broken relationships and hurting bodies? How can the work of Jesus bring about the personal, spiritual, and soc...

What makes a good life? What habits of attention, reflection, and action orient us towards knowing, desiring, and doing what is good, true, and beautiful? How does the kind of people we are as Christians affect our participation in civic life? And how can our institutions provide spiritual formation to help us engage faithfully in this sphere? As we enter an el...
A New Year With The Word
Переглядів 2 тис.5 місяців тому
We started the new year with an exploration of the word - the Word made flesh, and the words we use each day. Why are words so central for God’s design for our world? Can the creative acts of speaking and writing provide a window into what it means to be created in the image of God? And in these times, in which words often seem to be devalued, is there a place for the slow, deep language of poe...

DARPA also funded projects relating to Transhumanism! As the saying goes all wars are banker wars. We go to war to kill, steal, drill and bill for profit! As a nation we have been at war for over 200 years. The military & Israeli created the internet. Julian Assange & Edward Snowden warned us of the now increasing cyber tools and weapons that can and will be connected to the digital currency!

As long as there is a Bill Gates and the Global 1% including The Rockefeller Foundation you must be held accountable for addressing the massive weaponization of medicine and the reality that Transhumanism = Eugenics is a very well known history in England. The technology is amazing and we need it EXCEPT when used to replace humanity and workers as the Globalist and America is rolling out. When it comes to Theology there are thousands of different bibles . To use this technology against a persons will as with mental illness and involuntary Civil Commitment Laws is a reminder of the experiments of NAZI, Germany. Eisenhower and the Pentagons Brain is a historical reality!

Where was Stanley Hauerwas? An event involving Duke faculty members should definitely have included him. It would have been very important to underscore the point that someone might be skeptical about democracy without being an authoritarian or a populist.

Super interview… all of it. It challenges us to open doors to relationships with those around us. In doing so we can have meaningful conversations that are attractive to the non-churched and the anti-church. These conversations, with whispers of good news, may invite them to ask questions or even come to know the God we love. But we should not approach relationships with people with an agenda, but rather with questions and an open heart. Then the conversation dives into a discussion of specific sins. The bottom line? Sin breaks community with those who God loves. These are the people who we are to love as well.

I haven't read the book. The 1st 20 minutes she doesn't say much. So-she is saying that sin is traumatizing and results in disconnection. Sin disconnects us from each other and from God. Our true nature is Oneness with God and one another. God is not limited, rather the definition of diversity, as exampled in Jesus' love.

I have heard Jonah Goldberg and now David Brooks respond to Patrick Deneen. The former attacks, raging against Deneen without giving examples or dealing with his books, the latter romanticizes about a liberal creed. Their differing responses reveal the bankruptcy of a liberalism without Nature and nature's God.

Helpful, well explained and important advice. Relational stress must be managed and we are at a major shift stage. Personal and institutional wisdom and discernment is crucial to do better than barely accommodate disagreement. Charismatic individuals can be convincing and can hinder more retiring personalities, thus good, carefully nuanced, creative outcomes/ solutions can be the casualties. In other words, if we don't prepare the ground well, as was pointed out by John, taking the time and making the long game investment, much of value, can be missed. I would add that we miss the blessings. Gen Z are begging for good examples and our retreat now would be disastrous, though as a Christian, I trust God for better because there is grace and mercy, borne out, in part, by work and discussions of this kind. The Trinity Forum host some respectful and probing interviews. My thanks to you both.💐
